As part of its active role in rebuilding Syria's energy infrastructure, Türkiye will begin exporting natural gas to the country on August 2, extending Syria's daily electricity supply from 3–4 hours to 10 hours.
Natural gas from Azerbaijan to Türkiye will be pumped through Kilis to Syria.
Türkiye, which has been strengthening its energy relations with Syria, began efforts to support the restoration of normal life in December 2024 following the fall of the Baath regime.
Natural gas connection from Kilis to Aleppo was completed on May 21, with the restoration of damaged pipelines.
The line has the capacity to carry 6 million cubic meters gas daily, which could reach up to 2 billion cubic meters annually.
The gas will be used to generate 1,200 megawatts (MW) of electricity in a plant in Aleppo.
In an announcement on July 30, Türkiye's Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar, said that Türkiye will collaborate with Azerbaijan and Qatar in exporting natural gas to Syria.
- Birecik-Aleppo line to be reactivated
Bayraktar announced that Türkiye plans to increase electricity exports to northern Syria to 280 MW through existing transmission lines and noted ongoing efforts to reactivate the Birecik-Aleppo electricity line, which previously had a capacity of around 500 MW.
Once the line is operational, Bayraktar said that a total of approximately 900 MW of electricity could be delivered to Syria, enough to meet the needs of roughly 1.6 million households.
Syria's energy infrastructure suffered extensive damage due to the civil war that began in 2011.
Power generation facilities, transmission lines, and natural gas systems were heavily damaged, reducing daily electricity supply in many regions to just 3–4 hours.
Following the collapse of the Baath regime in December 2024, a transitional period was launched in Syria, with the reconstruction of energy infrastructure identified as a top priority.
Leveraging its technical expertise and geographic proximity, Türkiye began actively contributing to rebuilding efforts during this phase.
Türkiye had previously supplied limited amounts of electricity to northern Syria, occasionally providing regional support through transmission lines.
