A proposal for a 500-kilometer green hydrogen pipeline stretching from Izmir’s Aliaga district to the northwestern province of Kocaeli has been submitted to the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, the Green Hydrogen Producers Association of Türkiye (H2DER) said Friday.
H2DER Vice President Murat Asci told Anadolu that the project represents a key milestone in Türkiye’s push to strengthen energy security, industrial competitiveness, and net-zero targets.
“Hydrogen must be seen as both an energy vector and a chemical raw material — essential for integrating Türkiye’s energy system,” Asci said.
He noted that the investment is estimated at around €500 million, with the line designed to operate between 70 and 100 bars of pressure and a hydrogen production capacity of 5 gigawatts.
The system is expected to transport up to 600 kilotons of green hydrogen annually.
The proposed route will run close to refineries, petrochemical complexes, fertilizer and ammonia plants, and organized industrial zones, creating what Asci called “a strategic backbone for Türkiye’s hydrogen economy.”
- Regulatory clarity key to advancing hydrogen market
Asci said that Türkiye's hydrogen sector could gain momentum through targeted legal and regulatory reforms.
“Hydrogen should be clearly defined in legislation as an energy carrier derived from wind and solar power,” he said.
Asci also called for comprehensive standards, safety, and licensing frameworks for hydrogen use in land, air, and maritime transport, along with pilot projects for hydrogen refueling stations and vehicle fleets.
Simplifying customs procedures and import rules for hydrogen-related equipment, while supporting domestic manufacturing and technology transfer, would further accelerate growth, he added.
“Türkiye has the potential to become a regional hydrogen hub,” Asci said.
“With the right regulatory support and infrastructure, we can make green hydrogen a pillar of the country’s clean energy transition.”
