Around a thousand Italian farmers gathered in Milan on Tuesday to protest soaring agricultural sector costs and the impact of international crises.

The demonstration, organized by the Lombardy branch of the Italian Farmers’ Association (Coldiretti), saw around 30 tractors line up outside the headquarters of the Lombardy Regional Administration.

Farmers carried banners reading "No food without agriculture," "Free market with equal rules," and "Stop speculation in the meat supply chain," while some lit flares.

Protesters also set up a large chessboard in the square with pieces symbolizing the various challenges that are affecting agricultural production.

Speaking at the rally, Coldiretti official Giacomo Guffanti said farmers need reassurance that they can work safely and with dignity.

"This is not a hobby; it is a profession," he said. "We do this work because we love it and are passionate about it. Today we are asking the regional administration to support farmers and stand by the agricultural sector."

Gianfranco Comicioli, the head of Coldiretti Lombardy, said rising energy and fertilizer costs are making it increasingly difficult to manage production sustainably.

"Fertilizer prices are now 49% higher than before, and energy costs have risen 66%," he said. "These tensions affect production, prices, and ultimately international trade."

Farmers also highlighted the challenges of farming in mountainous regions and called for more support to control wildlife and ease operational difficulties.
