At least two people were killed Wednesday when two small planes collided midair at the Marana Regional Airport in the state of Arizona, said authorities.
The Marana Police Department confirmed the fatalities and said both aircraft were single-engine fixed-wing planes.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said Marana Regional Airport is an uncontrolled field and identified the planes as a Cessna 172S and a Lancair 360 MK II, which collided around 8.25 a.m. local time (1525GMT).
Two people were aboard each plane.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will lead an investigation into the crash.
The crash came as the administration of Donald Trump is dismissing hundreds of FAA probationary employees responsible for maintaining critical air traffic control infrastructure, the Professional Aviation Safety Specialists (PASS) union pointed out Monday.
