All of the Turkish dailies covered Fenerbahce's victory over Italy's Lazio. Fenerbahce qualified for semifinals in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday night after a 1-1 draw in Rome that earned the Istanbul side a 3-1 win on aggregate against their Italian rivals in the second leg of a quarter-final game. "Fenerbahce runs for the finals," daily CUMHURIYET headlined, saying that the club advanced to semifinals in a European championship for the very first time in the club's history.
-Turkey's much-debated "4th judiciary package" approved-
"Surprise step at the 4th package," daily RADIKAL headlined over the adoption of a bill that seeks to expand human rights and freedoms of speech and press in Turkey. The daily said the bill stipulated that those charged with spreading the propaganda of a terrorist group cannot be automatically charged with being a member of that terrorist group. "Freedom touch to the 4th package," daily TARAF headlined, adding that the law had raised hopes that students who were arrested at protests over paid education could be released from custody.
-Turkish type semi-presidency-
Most dailies covered the ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party's reported plans to offer a semi-presidential system. "Turkish type semi-presidency" daily VATAN headlined, saying that the AK Party will revise a former proposal for a full-fledged presidential system following objection from opposition parties and opt instead for a French type presidential system. The daily said in the French system, an elected president could be the chairman of a political party as the president appoints the prime minister and prime minister will form his cabinet and function as an aide to the president. "New formula is the semi-presidency," daily MILLIYET said, adding that the AK Party "turned its route to the Turkish type semi-presidency."
-'Wise people committee' is in charge in Southeastern Anatolia-
Most dailies covered a meeting in southeast Turkey of 'a wise people committee' of prominent scholars, journalists, businesspeople and performing artists who seek to increase public support to the Turkish government's efforts aimed at ending PKK terrorism and decades of fighting that left tens of thousands of people dead. Daily TARAF wrote "the wise people of Southeastern Anatolia," one of the seven regional groups within the 63-strong committee, held their first meeting in Diyarbakir province. The daily quoted head of the group, Yilmaz Ensarioglu, as saying that all eyes were on the southeastern region and "we are trying to understand the region correctly." He added 90 percent of the region supported the solution process. Daily TURKIYE said following the meeting, the committee visited Dicle University and issued a warning that provocation attempts should not be allowed to spoil the process.
-Moody's links solution process with rating upgrade-
Most dailies covered international credit rating agency Moody's remarks on the solution process for Turkey's Kurdish issue. The agency reportedly described the process "a positive development" for the country's credit rating. "Babacan briefed and persuaded Moody's," daily STAR headlined over a meeting between Ali Babacan, Turkish deputy premier in charge of economy, and Moody's officials, saying that the meeting raised hopes for a long-awaited Moody's upgrade Turkey's rating to investment grade.
