CAIRO
Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi on Wednesday called for a political solution to the ongoing conflict in Syria.
Speaking at a press conference in Moscow, Sisi said his talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin focused on the need to reach a political solution to the Syrian conflict based on the Geneva conference, which calls for holding fresh presidential elections in Syria and constitutional amendments.
Syria fell into a deadly civil war in 2011 after President Bashar al-Assad violently suppressed pro-democracy protests.
According to the UN, more than 250,000 people have been killed in Syria since the conflict began.
Sisi said his talks with Putin also tackled developments in Palestine, Libya, Iraq as well as combating terrorism.
Putin, for his part, said that Russia and Egypt have agreed to cooperate on fighting terrorism.
Sisi arrived in Moscow on a three-day visit to Russia, his third since he came to office last year.
Egyptian-Russian relations have greatly improved since 2013 when the military deposed President Mohamed Morsi in a coup.
