Germany's Merz dismisses speculation about US President Trump's health
Chancellor says he has 'no reason to doubt' Trump's health after media speculation, notes president will turn 80 in June but appears fit for office
BERLIN
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Wednesday dismissed media speculation about US President Donald Trump's health, saying he has seen no sign that the American leader is unable to fulfill his duties.
"First of all, based on my encounters with President Trump, I have no reason to doubt his health," Merz told a press conference in Berlin when asked about recent media reports questioning Trump's fitness for office.
"He will turn 80 in June, but I have the impression that he is fully capable of performing his duties," the German leader added.
"I have no indication whatsoever that this should not be the case," Merz said.
Since becoming German chancellor in May 2025, Merz has stayed in regular contact with Trump. The two leaders have met several times and held various telephone conversations to discuss transatlantic relations and international security issues.
