WASHINGTON
Spokesperson for the US Department of State, Victoria Nuland, has said that based on what they know of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's position, they prospect that Erdogan must have conveyed Turkey's concerns on Syria frankly to Iran President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad in their meeting in Baku summit on Tuesday.
Answering a question at a daily press meeting on Tuesday on whether anyone in the US Department of State knew that Erdogan and Ahmedinejad would meet, Nuland said that she did not have any particular information on an advanced notice. She added that Turkey and US coordinate extremely closely on issues having to do with Syria.
On the second question if the Department still think that it was a bad idea to invite Iran to multilateral meetings on Syria, Nuland said that "they continue to believe that the Iranians were a malign force in that, that they were actively aiding and abetting the Syrian regime and its war machine. So they could halt that activity before we would see them as productive in any multilateral efforts."
