LONDON
Britain has taken into custody Wednesday four British citizens, who were earlier deported from Turkey after they allegedly attempted to enter Syria illegally to join militant groups including Daesh.
The suspects, who are aged between 22 and 47 years old, were taken into custody at Manchester Airport after their plane from Turkey landed early Wednesday, Manchester police officers said in a statement.
On April 1, Turkish security officials at the Syrian border had caught nine British citizens, including four children, in Turkey’s southern provinces of Hatay and Gaziantep.
One of them, Waheed Ahmed, 21, son of a British Labor councilor, Shakil Ahmed, was taken into custody for police interrogation on Tuesday.
The children, aged 1, 3, 8, and 11, are now under court protection, Manchester police officers said.
Thousands of foreign fighters from all over the world are believed to have joined groups such as Daesh, in Syria and Iraq.
Turkey shares an 800-kilometer-long border with Syria.
