At least one person was killed and over 50 others left missing after a South Korean fishing vessel sank Monday in the Bering Sea.

The boat, registered as the Oryong 501, went down in waters near Russia at around 14.20 (7.20 Turkish time), South Korea’s national news agency reported, citing the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.

While a Korean crew member has been confirmed dead, a Russian inspector and six other foreign nationals have been rescued, according to Yonhap.

As the vessel struggled with seawater flooding in due to bad weather, crew members had called for help from Russian rescue officials and a nearby ship, the ministry said.

Seoul's foreign ministry has requested that Russia move swiftly in searching for those missing.

At the time of the accident, the vessel had been carrying 60 crew members, including a Russian inspector, 11 South Koreans, 35 Indonesians and 13 Philippine nationals, according to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.
