LONDON
German tennis player Angelique Kerber defeated Maria Sharapova from Russia, the winner of the 2014 French Open - also known as Roland Garros - and qualified for the quarter finals in Wimbledon on Tuesday.
In the women's singles, 2012 Wimbledon semi-finalist, Kerber met 2014 French Open winner Sharapova on Tuesday. Germany's Kerber knocked Sharapova out of the tournament by defeating her 7-6, 4-6 and 6-4 in three sets and advanced to the next round in Wimbledon.
Meanwhile Romanian Simona Halep beat Kazakh Zarina Diyas comfortably after winning sets 6-3 and 6-0. She now qualifies for the last eight in the tournament.
In addition, in men's singles, globally known Swiss tennis player Roger Federer having 7 titles in Wimbledon eased past Tommy Robredo 3-0 by defeating him 6-1, 6-4 and 6-4. This win made Federer qualify for the quarter finals.
Having won his first "grand slam" title in Australian Open this year, Stanislas Wawrinka beat his opponent Feliciano Lopez 3-0 (7-6, 7-6 and 6-3) and advanced to quarter final stage in Wimbledon.
