Clashes between rival presidential guard units in South Sudan have continued overnight and into Monday morning amid reports of an attempted military coup in the fledgling African country.

"Clashes broke out when one unit suspected an incursion by another unit," South Sudan's official news agency reported.

"Heavy fighting ensued with no casualties reported until 7am GMT," sources told the agency.

"Heavy exchanges of gunfire are continuing in Juba and adjacent areas," the sources added.

An Anadolu Agency reporter also said that Sudan's state-run radio and television broadcasting service had been cut.

South Sudanese President Salva Kiir has recently come under fire from senior members of the ruling Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM), who accuse him of failing to adequately run the party and the nascent country.

SPLM leaders voiced unprecedented criticism of Kiir early this month, saying that he favored a small clique within the party to other members, leading to polarization inside the movement.

Kiir has also been facing demands that he step down and refrain from contesting 2015 elections.
