An attack on a police station killed 16 people including two police officers on Sunday in the Kashgar province of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in China.
Unidentified gunmen launched the attack at around 11 pm in Shufu town, according to official internet news portal Tieshan.
It is reported that 14 gunmen were killed, but no detail has been given regarding the case which is currently under investigation.
Last month, 11 people were killed in an attack on a police station in Serikbuya township.
One such incident in June left 35 people dead and 139 people have been arrested in recent months.
According to the official count, 200 people were killed in the tensions in the Urumchi province of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China in 2009. Armed police officers were deployed across the state at the time.
High level security precautions were taken in densely populated areas like Kashgar, Hotan, Ili.
Uyghurs are a Turkic minority primarily inhabiting the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.
