CAIRO
The Arab League on Tuesday condemned the death of Aziz Awaisat, a 53-year-old Palestinian who died in Israeli custody due to what the league described as “deliberate medical negligence”.
In a statement, the Cairo-based league held the Israeli authorities “fully responsible” for Awaisat’s death, slamming Israel for its “gross violations of the most basic rules of human rights law”.
The league also criticized the “harsh conditions inside Israeli prisons, which lack basic amenities and in which Palestinian prisoners are subjected to various forms of torture, deprivation… and medical negligence”.
The Israeli authorities arrested Awaisat in 2014, later slapping him with a 30-year jail sentence.
Last week, after being beaten by Israeli prison guards, Awaisat suffered severe internal bleeding, which caused him to fall into a coma and eventually die.
