LONDON
Nearly half of British citizens oppose the government's move to allow the US to use UK airbases to launch attacks against Iran, according to a new survey.
Almost half, 49%, of people oppose the UK's decision to allow Washington to use British airbases specifically to launch attacks against missile bases in Iran, according to a poll conducted by YouGov on Thursday.
Of those, 28% said they strongly opposed, while 21% said they somewhat oppose.
Meanwhile, 35% of British people said they supported the decision to allow the US to use UK bases, with 15% saying they strongly supported and 20% saying they somewhat supported the decision.
A total of 16% of people surveyed said they did not know.
The UK government has faced criticism over its role in the US-Iran war following reports suggesting that US forces are actively using the UK's Royal Air Force Fairford base.
Since Israel and the US launched joint attacks on Iran on Feb. 28, so far killing some 1,300 people, including then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, hostilities have escalated.
Iran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting US military assets.
