Italian turbine manufacturer EXERGY delivered 10 Radial Outflow Turbines to five geothermal units in Aydın in western Turkey which were recently granted eligibility for the national feed in tariff starting from January 2017, the Italian company announced Thursday.
The five units will generate from renewable energy a total of 110 megawatts of electricity (MWe) to be delivered to the Turkish grid, the statement read.
'The Italian leader in the design and manufacturing of Organic Rankine Cycle systems with its pioneering Radial Outflow Turbine technology has worked alongside their customers to obtain Ministry Acceptance for five different geothermal units in five days,' the statement added.
EXERGY is a subsidiary of Italian group Maccaferri Industrial Group which has an annual turnover of €1.2 billion with 4,700 employees across the globe.
The company, originally based in the Italian province of Varese, opened its second factory abroad in Izmir, where most of the geothermal power plants in the country are located.
In October, the Turkish Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources declared that the following geothermal units met the required performance targets to obtain the national feed in tariff starting from January 2017:
- Kubilay I, 24 MWe unit for client Bestepeler Enerji Üretim Ticaret AS (Bestepler Energy Trade Production)
- Mehmet Han, 25 MWe unit for client Kipas Holding
- Ken Kipas 3, 25 MWe unit for client Kipas Holding
- Umurlu II, 12 MWe unit for client Karadeniz Holding
- Sultanhisar I, 14 MWe unit for client Celikler Holding
EXERGY supported and partnered with its clients through the entire procedure towards ministry acceptance. It fulfilled all the technical parameters requested for the acceptance, and therefore allowed each customer to increase revenues and profitability of the plants, the statement read.
'EXERGY has also obtained the Made in Turkey certificate for four Radial Outflow Turbines delivered to Kemaliye Alasehir -- 12 MWe for units 1 and 2,' it highlighted.
“We have managed to obtain the acceptance for all the five units in just one week. This record demonstrates our team work and efficient and prompt collaboration with our local clients. We are proud of this success and ready to tackle new challenges and achieve new goals,” EXERGY’s CEO, Claudio Spadacini, was quoted as saying in the statement.
Turkey’s geothermal sector has experienced an incredible rise in recent years with a growth in power generation capacity from 30 megawatts (MW) in 2008 to the current 648 MW.
As a result, Turkey is attracting a lot of interest from the global geothermal energy community, both as a market for products and services, and as an example on how to stimulate geothermal project development.
