Syrian Oil Minister Ghiath Diab inaugurated the 'Tiyas 5' gas well in the Homs countryside in central Syria on Thursday.
The well has a production capacity of 130,000 cubic meters per day, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).
SANA reported that the new well is operated by the Syrian Oil Company and has been connected to the national gas network to support power generation stations to enhance electricity supply and help meet the growing energy needs of Syrian citizens.
Syria’s confirmed gas reserves, based on 2015 statistics, are estimated at 8.5 trillion cubic feet.
Syria’s oil resources are primarily located in two main regions: the northeast, particularly Al-Hasakah, and the east, stretching along the Euphrates River to the Iraqi border near Deir ez-Zor, with smaller oil fields in southern Raqqa.
Meanwhile, gas resources are mostly found in the central regions extending toward Palmyra (Tadmur).
Bashar Assad, Syria’s leader for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia on Dec. 8, ending the Baath Party’s regime, which had been in power since 1963.
The next day, Ahmed al-Sharaa, the leader of the new Syrian administration, who was appointed Jan. 29 as president, tasked Mohammed Al-Bashir with forming a government to oversee Syria’s transitional period.
