Israeli warplanes struck oil storage depots and refining facilities in Iran’s capital Tehran on Saturday evening, according to Israel’s public broadcaster.
The strikes mark the first time Israel has targeted such facilities since it launched a broader attack on Iran last week together with the US.
In a statement, the Israeli army said it began a new wave of strikes targeting Iran's infrastructure in the capital.
Israel’s public broadcaster KAN reported that the Israeli Air Force targeted oil storage depots and refining facilities in Tehran.
Meanwhile, Iran’s semi-official Mehr News Agency reported that explosions were heard in Tehran following the strikes.
In response to the targeting of the Tehran refinery, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said that the Haifa refinery in Israel was hit by missiles, according to Fars news agency.
Regional tensions have escalated since the United States and Israel launched a large-scale attack on Iran on Feb. 28, killing more than 1,000 people, including Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, over 150 schoolgirls, and senior military officials.
Iran has retaliated with sweeping barrages of its own that have targeted US bases, diplomatic facilities, and military personnel across the region, as well as multiple Israeli cities.
