Russia and Ukraine said on Sunday that their energy infrastructures were targeted in overnight airstrikes.
The Ukrainian Energy Ministry said in a statement on Telegram that energy infrastructure in its central Poltava region, particularly in the industrial city of Kremenchuk, was hit and that efforts to restore power as soon as possible are underway.
“In all regions of Ukraine, hourly outage schedules and power limitation schedules for industrial consumers and businesses are currently in effect,” the statement said, noting that the energy infrastructure in the neighboring Chernihiv was also hit, where local authorities said one person died.
Acting Poltava Governor Volodymyr Kohut said that fires broke out as a result of direct hits on several energy facilities, as well as due to falling debris, while Kremenchuk Mayor Vitalii Maletskyi said water supply to the city has partially been restored.
Ukraine’s Air Force claimed on Telegram that its air defenses shot down 175 out of 241 various types of drones, as well as four out of 10 different types of missiles, launched by Russia overnight.
Russian authorities have not immediately commented on the attack or the claim, though its Defense Ministry claimed to have intercepted 77 Ukrainian drones launched at the country overnight, with 42 downed in the country’s Saratov and 12 in the Rostov region.
In Rostov, Governor Yuri Slyusar wrote on Telegram that a power transmission tower in the region was damaged, leaving 250 residents without access to electricity. Ukraine has yet to comment on the attack.
Moscow and Kyiv have frequently traded accusations about targeting each other’s energy facilities amid winter and ongoing discussions over a proposed US-drafted plan aimed at advancing peace efforts in Ukraine.
