Germany's EnBW and Denmark's Dong Energy won the tender for the first German offshore wind auction for the 900 megawatts He Dreiht offshore wind farm, the companies announced on Thursday.
EnBW said that the He Dreiht is one of the world's first offshore wind farms without state subsidies and offers a combination of benefits in terms of cost and efficiency that is unique in Germany.
The company suggested that He Dreiht's proximity to two EnBW wind farms in the North Sea will lead to cost-savings, and together with those two farms, around 1,500 megawatts of capacity can be realized and operated.
“We currently already operate two offshore wind farms with a capacity of around 336 megawatts and plan to realize two further wind farms with around 610 megawatts of generation capacity by 2019 – marking an important step in the implementation of our EnBW 2020 strategy," EnBW CEO Frank Mastiaux was quoted as saying.
"As announced at our press conference for the annual report in March, we will also push forward the expansion of renewable energies as a strategic focus of our company in the period beyond 2020. We have laid the foundations for sustainable growth in the period beyond 2020 by gaining approval for He Dreiht,” he continued.
The German grid-operator, Bundesnetzagentur, has made its decision earlier than anticipated to award EnBW and Dong Energy the tender in the first German auction round for offshore wind, Dong Energy said.
