The U.S. Embassy in Khartoum has warned of possible terrorist attacks in Sudan.
“Terrorist groups continue plotting attacks in Sudan, especially in Khartoum. Terrorists may attack with little or no warning, targeting foreign and local government facilities, and areas frequented by Westerners,” the embassy said in a statement issued late Monday.
The statement warned that westerners could be subject to suicide attacks, shooting and kidnapping in the country.
The embassy warned American nationals against travelling to Darfur, Blue Nile and Southern Kordofan province as armed opposition groups have active presence there.
“The U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in Sudan,” the embassy said.
Darfur has been the scene of a ferocious war between the Sudanese government and three rebel movements since 2003.
Washington has lifted two decades of economic sanctions imposed on Sudan last year, but the country is still on the U.S. list of countries sponsoring the terrorism.
