An investigation into the pregnant Pakistani woman who was stoned to death by her family members for marrying against their will, has revealed that the woman was already married.
Zulfikar Hameed, the head of the investigation team told the Anadolu Agency that Farzana Parveen, 25, had married her cousin, Mazhar Iqbal two years ago.
“She re-married Mohammad Iqbal without getting a divorce from Mazhar,” he added.
Farzana later fled from her home and married Mohammad Iqbal in January 2014, the report said.
The report added that Farzana had declared that her first marriage was not consummated.
According to Hameed, a case for re-marrying without divorcing her first husband, which is considered a punishable crime, had been registered against both her and the second husband in their native town Syedwala, located some 100 Kilometers south of Lahore.
Iqbal, who also was injured in the attack outside the Lahore High Court on Tuesday, confessed to murdering his first wife six years ago in order to marry Farzana. He, however, was spared a prison term after his son, who was the complainant in the case, forgave him under the controversial blood-money law.
The Chief Justice of Pakistan Tassaduq Hussein Jilani, has taken suo-moto notice (on its own motion) and summoned a detailed report within next 48 hours on the issue from the police authorities in the case of Farzana’s murder which has become the subject of global headlines.
