BELFAST (AA) - British Prime Minister David Cameron on Tuesday said they would support a Syrian government that would receive the backing of all Syrians
Speaking in a press conference after the G-8 summit meeting in Northern Ireland, Cameron said that G-8 group had "very different opinions" on the Syria crisis, adding, "however, we all want to resolve this problem and help Syrian people in things they want to change."
He underlined that G8 leaders agreed on seven points during summit, including a commitment to increase humanitarian aid to Syria with a pledge worth of $1.5 billion. Cameron stressed they also decided to mount diplomatic pressure and bring together all parties in Syria for negotiation.
Cameron said the summit also discussed "the Geneva process" which he said would help forming a transitional government to oversee securing basic state establishments, as well as clearing Syria from terrorists and extremists, condemning use of chemical weapon, and rejecting sectarian conflicts.
"This agreement was possible with open, sincere and leader-to-leader meetings. Each leader around the table knows that only words were not sufficient to end the Syrian issue," Cameron said.
G8 leaders stopped short of urging Assad to step down due to opposition by Russia, a staunch ally of the Assad regime.
