WASHINGTON
The first person to be diagnosed with the Ebola virus in the U.S., died Wednesday, according to a Texas hospital spokesman.
Thomas Eric Duncan was diagnosed with Ebola on Sept. 28, seven days after he arrived in Texas from Liberia.
At a press conference in Atlanta last week, CDC Director Thomas Frieden said Duncan had come from Liberia to visit family in Texas.
The state’s health officials last week ordered four close family members of Duncan to stay home and not have any visitors to prevent the potential spread of disease.
They say they believed he had contact with approximately 100 people, including dozen of school children.
According to The Associated Press, health officials have identified 10 people, including seven health workers, who had direct contact with Duncan while he was contagious.
The Ebola virus can be transmitted four days after an infected person becomes sick.
The virus has killed more than 3,400 people across West Africa and infected several Americans who have traveled to the region.
