Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood candidate and former Prime Minister Ahmed Shafik are leading the first round of presidential elections.
Although final result will not be published until Sunday, out of 13,099 ballot boxes, 10,500 have been opened in the first round of presidential election in Egypt.
According to current result, the leader of the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party Mohammed Mursi has received the highest votes and Ahmed Shafik, the last prime minister of the former regime (Hosni Mubarak regime) comes behind Mursi.
The early election result follows:
Number of ballot boxes in total: 13,099
Number of ballot boxes opened: 10,500
Mohammed Mursi: 4,799,578
Ahmed Shafik: 4,282,911
Hamdin Sabbahi: 3,115,793
Abdul Moneim Aboul Fotouh: 3,029,352
Amr Moussa: 2,047,676
The current situation signifies that none of the candidates can become the new president of Egypt as they are unable to win more than 50 percent of votes. In the light of current result, Muhammad Mursi and Ahmed Shafik will compete in the second round which will take place on June 16-17.
The new president of Egypt will be made public on June 21 and take over the office on July 1.
The Election Commission had estimated the turnout at 50%. The election lasted two days, and the polls closed at 9:00 p.m. local time on Thursday evening, an hour later than planned.
