CAIRO (AA) – Egyptian President Mohammad Morsi has refused the announcements made by Defense Minister Abdel Fatah El Sisi describing it as a “military coup”.
In a statement, Morsi urged the people to abide by the constitution and law and not to accept what happened, insisting he was still the president and the supreme leader of the armed forces.
Sisi has announced the head of the constitutional court as the new interim president of Egypt until presidential elections are held.
He said this was part of a roadmap for the future of Egypt that also includes temporarily suspending the constitution and forming a coalition government of technocrats.
The defense minister added that the new interim president would be able to issue constitutional declarations until the suspended constitution is amended through a special committee the interim president will form.
He said the roadmap stipulates holding early presidential elections and formatting of a high committee for national reconciliation.
