BENGHAZI
Renegade Libyan army general Khalifa Haftar was injured in a Tuesday attempt on his life in eastern Libya, a medical source said Wednesday.
He added, however, that Haftar's injuries weren't serious.
The source said Haftar had been discharged from hospital after receiving treatment.
The source did not provide details as to the nature of the general's injuries, but said they weren't serious.
Haftar spokesman Mohamed Hegazi told Anadolu Agency earlier that Haftar had survived an assassination attempt after a suicide bomber blew up his car near Haftar's command headquarters in Benghazi's Al-Marg district.
"Such attacks will only raise our morale and boost our determination to continue our fight against terror," Hegazi said.
No group has claimed responsibility for Tuesday's attack.
Saqr al-Grouchi, an army general who has called himself the commander of Haftar's air force, said three of Haftar's guards had been killed in the attack, along with the suicide bomber.
"We have the bomber's remains," al-Grouchi asserted.
Haftar, once an opponent of late Libyan strongman Muammar Gaddafi, recently declared war on Benghazi-based militias, some of which were absorbed into the regular army following Gaddafi's 2011 ouster and death.
Recent fighting between the two sides has left scores dead in the restive city.
Haftar says his anti-militia campaign, dubbed "Operation Dignity," aims to "purge" Libya of "extremists."
Libya's government, however, has called the general's campaign a "coup" against constitutional legitimacy.
