The death toll in Moscow's subway crash has reached 23, the Russian Health Ministry said on Wednesday.
Those injured in Tuesday’s rush-hour crash are still being treated in hospital. The Metro train derailed between Park Pobedy and Slaviansky Boulevard stations.
Rescue efforts to evacuate passengers trapped in the accident are continuing.
Two rail workers – Valery Bashkatov and Yury Gordov – were arrested after the derailment, according to investigators. They are accused of failing to properly install a track switch mechanism.
Wednesday has been a national day of mourning in Russia and people have brought flowers to the scene to commemorate the victims.
“Technical studies would take about 24 hours to check every centimeter of the rails and investigations continue,” Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said.
One injured passenger, a woman named Yelena, said: “The train suddenly braked. People fell on me, and then the lights went out.”
