KABUL
The governor of Afghanistan's central Logar province was killed on Tuesday when a mosque was bombed during prayers being performed for the Eid al-Adha, a major Islamic holiday.
Arsala Jamal died when a bomb planted under a table at a mosque in Pule-alam, the capital city of Logar province, exploded.
"The explosives were placed in the [Khitaba] table in the mosque," provincial spokesman Din Mohamed Darwaish told Anadolu Agency.
The explosion rocked the house of worship as the governor was reading Afghan President Hamid Karzai's Eid message to worshippers.
"Governor Arsala Jamal lost his life by the explosion and 15 people who are tribal elders and civilians are wounded," Darwaish said.
While no group has claimed responsibility, the government spokesman accused the Taliban of carrying out the attack, which it described as "inhumane."
"We strongly condemn this act," he said. "They [the Taliban] have made many families sad on this holy day. People who could have a few days of happiness are now mourning."
Jamal had been a well-known writer and political analyst. He had served as the governor of Khost province before being appointed governor of Logar.
