YALOVA, Turkey

A Japanese man has been found with his throat cut in a cemetery in Turkey’s northwestern province of Yalova.

The 50-year-old worked as an engineer with a company involved in the construction of the Istanbul-Bursa-Izmir highway, and last worked on the Izmit Gulf Pass Suspension Bridge.

Police said that the deceased, Ryoichi Kishi, was found at the Altinova district cemetery in Yalova early Monday with cuts to his throat and body and a written note on him.

Coworkers said that Kishi had been feeling down two days ago and they last saw him Sunday night.

The 50-year-old is believed to have left another note in his room which read: "I am entirely responsible for this event. No one had any effect on this."

It is understood that the note refers to an accident in Kishi's workplace Saturday, when the bridge cable snapped off, causing the bay to be closed to traffic.

The note was found by his coworkers and handed to police.

Turkish authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

Japan is known for its centuries of suicide tradition, whereby a person takes their life to escape the shame of an immoral action, such as an extra-marital affair, defeat in battle, or - sometimes - negligence in the workplace.
