Turkey’s UEFA elite football referee Cuneyt Cakir will supervise matches in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, scheduled to take place in Brazil from June 12 to July 13. Cakir will be the first Turkish referee at the FIFA World Cup in 40 years after Dogan Babacan, who refereed during the 1974 World Cup.
FIFA Vice-President Jim Boyce said during the FIFA Referees Committee in Zurich that three teams of 25 referees each, including Turkey's referee Cakir, and two teams of eight referees each from 43 countries will supervise the games.
Cuneyt Cakir, one of the 23 most prominent referees in Europe, began his career in 1993. He has been a referee during more than 170 matches and was selected for the U21 finals in Sweden in 2009. He will be accompanied by two other referees Bahattin Duran and Tarik Ongun in Brazil.
Four referees from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), three referees from the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association of Football (CONCACAF), five referees from the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL), one referee from the Oceania Football Federation and nine referees from UEFA will take part in the games.
