US President Barack Obama arrived in North Ireland's Belfast on Monday to attend the G8 summit. Obama's spouse Michelle Obama and their daughters accompanied the US president as well.

The summit brings together world powers at Lough Erne in Northern Ireland for the G8 meeting on Monday and Tuesday, where they are expected to discuss recent developments in the more than two-year-long Syrian conflict.

Firstly, the US President Obama is expected to address youth in Belfast at about 16:00 Belfast local time. Later on, Obama will proceed to Lough Erne Gold Resort, near the city of Enniskillen in North Ireland.

Tight security measures will be applied during the summit in North Ireland. Around 8 thousand police officers will take duty near the area where the summit will take place.

The meeting, hosted by the UK, will see high-level representation from France, the US, the UK, Russia, Germany, Japan, Italy and Canada.

The Group of Eight (G8) is a forum for the governments of the world's eight wealthiest countries, not including China. The forum originated with a 1975 summit hosted by France that brought together representatives of six governments: France, the Federal Republic of Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, thus leading to the name Group of Six or G6.
