ISLAMABAD
At least seven people were killed and 34 others injured Friday when a stampede occurred at the end of a political rally organized by cricketer-turned politician Imran Khan in Pakistan, police and doctors said.
The incident occurred in the northeastern Multan city on Friday evening.
Dr Ashiq Ghani, the head of Nishtar Medical College hospital, said three young boys were brought dead to the hospital, while four other persons succumbed to their injuries later.
Four out of the 37 injured were in critical condition, he added.
Khan’s Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf party had organised the big anti-government public meeting at the local cricket stadium.
“The stampede occurred soon after Imran Khan left the venue, and the participants rushed to the eastern gate of the stadium,” Nauman Khan Babar, an eyewitness said.
“Several women and children fell unconscious on the spot due to suffocation,” Babar added.
According to the police, between 25,000 and 30000 people had attended the rally.
