Cameroonian President Paul Biya has earmarked $7 million for students adversely affected by insecurity caused by the Boko Haram militant group in the country's Extreme North region, the regional governor said Thursday.
"This money will be allocated for construction and renovation of 196 classrooms," Mindjiyawa Bakary said at a press conference.
He added that the money would also be used to buy desks and chairs for the students, along with the renovation of toilets and the digging of wells.
In recent months, students and teachers have fled roughly 200 schools in the Extreme North region as a result of frequent Boko Haram attacks.
The attacks forced some educational institutions to shut, forcing students to attend class in safer areas.
Boko Haram has been battling the Nigerian government for the last six years. In recent months, the radical sect has begun staging attacks in neighboring countries, including Cameroon.
