The coup in Egypt and its bloody aftermath has not been mentioned yet by world leaders currently meeting at the UN, says a US based Egyptian academic.
"It is as though the international community is willing to tolerate the use of chemical weapons on innocent civilians in order for a dictator to stay in power," said Hisseine Faradj, international relations professor at the City University of New York.
"You do not see daily report of demonstrations or how the economy is currently in free fall or that Cairo's national stadium was used to jail around a hundred protesters two months ago," Faradj stressed.
"The situation in Syria is certainly tragic but the treatment of Syrian refugees by the Egyptian military is equally tragic, because of the deteriorating economic situation the military is not able to get the humanitarian supplies they need, yet no one is covering this story closely." he said.
There are over a hundred thousand Syrian refugees in Egypt according to figures from the UN.
On why the Muslim Brotherhood failed in their one year in power, Faradj says, "with the appointment of eleven Supreme Court judges by Mubarak before he resigned as president, the “deep state” was left intact by the Transitional Military Council".
"The Muslim Brotherhood would have been better off if they had not run for presidency and instead, governed in coalition with the revolutionary youth leadership by assigning them key positions in the decision making process," Faradj underlined.
Regarding whether the Egyptian coup will be successful, Faradj said, "there is only limited period of time for any coup to be successful and thus far the coup has not been successful in consolidating its power over Egyptians".
He added "Thus, the more time passes the more the nervous and repressive becomes the military leadership in its tactics."
