7.2 quake rattles Tajikistan; no casualties reported
Tremors are also felt in parts of Pakistan, Afghanistan and India

KARACHI, Pakistan
A 7.2-magnitude earthquake shook eastern Tajikistan on Monday -- along with parts of Pakistan, Afghanistan and India -- without causing any loss of life or significant material damage.
According to Pakistan’s earthquake monitoring agency, tremors were felt in Islamabad, Peshawar, Gilgit, Chitral, Swat, Shangla and in other northern and northwestern districts on the borders of neighboring Afghanistan and China.
No loss of life or major infrastructural damage, however, has so far been reported.
Local television footage showed panicked citizens running out of their homes and gathering in open spaces.
Footage captured from different parts of the country also showed electricity poles, street lights and ceiling fans shaking as a result of the tremors.
In October, nearly 300 people were killed -- and thousands of homes, schools, shops and other buildings flattened -- by a 7.8-magnitude earthquake that rocked northwestern Pakistan.
Pakistan straddles the Eurasian tectonic plate, which is prone to earthquakes.
In 2005, over 80,000 people were killed in a massive earthquake that jolted northern Pakistan and the adjoining region of Azad Kashmir.
