BERLIN

Germany and France said on Tuesday they are ready to offer the US and Israel support for a political solution in the region after the end of hostilities in the Iran war.

Talks must be prepared in which, together with the Gulf states, ways to establish a new security architecture can be found, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul told a panel discussion with his French counterpart Jean-Noel Barrotin Berlin.

Wadephul, who recently visited the Greek Cypriot Administration, Israel, and various Gulf states, said all his interlocutors had asked Europe to “play a role and perhaps serve as a catalyst for talks.”

The German minister urged Israel and the US to provide notification once their military objectives in Iran had been achieved and if they sought support for such a political process. He did not expect a change of government in Tehran or a military resolution to the conflict.

Meanwhile, Barrot warned of instability in the region caused by US-Israel war on Iran, which could lead to new waves of migration and renewed terrorism. Hence, it is important to have a plan for the period after the fighting ends, he said, adding that the plan must ensure security, stability, and a form of regional integration for the region.

The US, along with Israel, launched attacks on Iran on Feb. 28, abandoning nuclear talks under the mediation of Oman.

The operation started on the pretext of destroying Iran's nuclear program and removing threats from the "Iranian regime." The ongoing attacks have since killed the supreme leader and many other high profile political and military figures.

Tehran, refusing to surrender, has retaliated by targeting Israel as well as Iraq and Gulf states which host US bases, affecting global markets and aviation. It has also effectively blocked the Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway for oil shipments, sending prices higher.
