Global installed wind power capacity surged by a record-breaking 117 gigawatts (GW) in 2024, reaching a total of 1,136 GW, according to the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) on Wednesday.
GWEC's Global Wind Report 2025 highlights that the 11% year-on-year increase marked the strongest year on record for the wind energy sector, underscoring growing momentum in the transition to renewable energy.
Of the total capacity added, 109 GW came from onshore wind projects, while offshore wind installations contributed 8 GW.
- Asia-Pacific leads charge
The majority of the growth approximately 75% was driven by China, India, and the broader Asia-Pacific region, the report noted.
Europe also demonstrated solid progress, adding 16.4 GW, of which 12.9 GW came from European Union member states. The United States and other countries in the Americas followed closely behind.
The report identified the top five countries shaping the global wind energy landscape in 2024: China, which led in both new installations and overall industry presence, followed by the United States, Germany, India, and Brazil.
Together, these five countries accounted for 81% of the total market, further consolidating their roles as key players in the renewable energy transition.
