The interim Taliban administration has secured the release of an Afghan citizen in exchange for two American nationals, the Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday.

It said Afghan citizen Khan Mohammad has been released by the US and sent back to Kabul.

He was traded for Americans Ryan Corbett and William McKenty, who are on their way home.

"As a result of long and productive negotiations between the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (Taliban) and the United States of America, an Afghan Mujahid prisoner (Khan Mohammad) was released from prison and sent back to Afghanistan in exchange for American detainees," said the ministry.

Mohammad, who was serving a life sentence by a US court in 2008, was arrested nearly two decades ago in Nangarhar province of Afghanistan by the US forces.

The ministry lauded Qatar for playing its role as Mohammed was flown to Doha, adding that the Taliban interim administration views the exchange as a "good example of resolving issues through dialogue."

"The Islamic Emirate looks positively at the actions of the United States that contribute to the normalization and expansion of relations between the two countries," it added.

While Corbett was detained in 2022, little is known about McKenty and details remain scant.
