At least six people were killed and five others injured after a massive snow avalanche struck the Srinagar-Leh highway at Zoji La Pass in eastern Ladakh on Friday, burying multiple vehicles and blocking the strategic route, Indian officials said.
On Friday afternoon, the avalanche hit the Captain-turn area of Zoji La Pass in the Drass area of the Kargil district in eastern Ladakh, burying at least 15 vehicles, officials said.
“Among the confirmed dead are four men, a woman, and a child,” Sub-Divisional Magistrate Vishal Atri said.
Authorities warned that casualties could rise as some vehicles remain completely buried under snow.
A large-scale rescue operation is underway involving police, the Indian army, the Border Roads Organization, the State Disaster Response Force, and local district administrations.
“More than 100 personnel are involved, supported by snow clearance machinery and ambulances,” Atri said.
Avalanches are sudden and rapid flows of snow down slopes, often triggered by heavy snowfall, temperature changes, or vibrations.
The Himalayan region, including Ladakh, is prone to avalanches during winter and early spring, posing significant risks to residents and travelers on high-altitude roads.
The Srinagar-Leh highway, a vital link connecting the Kashmir region with eastern Ladakh, is frequently affected during the winter months and requires constant monitoring and snow clearance.
Rescue authorities have appealed to travelers to avoid the highway until the snow is cleared and conditions are deemed safe.
