Chinese ruling party, Indian officials hold talks amid warming of ties
Communist Party of China’s Sun Haiyan leading 6-member delegation to India
NEW DELHI
Political exchanges between China and India appear to have picked up as the Chinese ruling Communist Party of China (CPC) and officials in New Delhi held talks in the last few days.
Ties between the world’s top two most populous nations nosedived following a June 2020 clash between their armies. But since late 2024, ties have improved with at least two meetings between their leaders.
Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri hosted Sun Haiyan, vice minister of the International Department of the CPC, and the two sides reviewed the “positive momentum in bilateral relations,” according to a statement by Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesman Randhir Jaiswal on US social media company X.
They “discussed ways to further advance ties by enhancing people-to-people exchanges and addressing concerns on sensitive issues,” said Jaiswal.
The militaries of Beijing and New Delhi engaged in blows in June 2020 in the Galwan Valley in the eastern Ladakh region along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), triggered by a dispute about infrastructure and patrolling.
At least 20 Indian soldiers and four Chinese soldiers were killed in the clashes.
But amid efforts to stabilize ties, the two sides resumed direct flights in October after a five-year break.
The six-member delegation of Chinese ruling party officials, on a three-day visit since Monday, also met India’s ruling Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) officials in New Delhi.
“We discussed how to enhance communication and interaction,” BJP’s General Secretary Arun Singh wrote on X.
According to the Hindustan Times, the Chinese officials also held talks with officials of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on Tuesday.
While the two parties have maintained contacts since the late 2000s, a delegation of the BJP and the RSS visited China in 2009, according to the Scroll news website.
The trip comes after Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi visited New Delhi in August, before the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a trip to China in September, where he held talks with President Xi Jinping and attended a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in the northern city of Tianjin.
