US defense company Northrop Grumman has developed an advanced electronic warfare upgrade for the F-16 Fighting Falcon to keep one of the world's most widely flown fourth-generation fighter jets "lethal and survivable" in modern combat, officials said on Thursday.

To address growing threats, the company is promoting its Integrated Viper Electronic Warfare Suite (IVEWS), an internally mounted radio-frequency electronic warfare system designed specifically for the F-16.

The system is intended to counter increasingly sophisticated radar-guided threats that operate across wider portions of the electromagnetic spectrum and use intermittent or mobile tactics.

The company's corporate vice president and regional executive for Europe and the Middle East, highlighted the aircraft’s enduring role across air-to-air combat, close air support, combat search and rescue, and strategic deterrence missions in a media briefing, which Anadolu attended virtually.

"The F-16 has been the workhorse of the global fighter fleet for decades," Joseph Guastella said. “But every one of those missions depends on survivability. If the jet can’t survive in a high-end fight, it can’t deliver its effects.”

While fifth- and sixth-generation fighters such as the F-35, F-22 and the upcoming B-21 offer cutting-edge capabilities, company representatives underlined that those platforms are produced in limited numbers.

In contrast, thousands of fourth-generation aircraft, including more than 2,800 F-16s, remain in service worldwide and will form the backbone of air forces for decades.

James Conroy, vice president at Northrop Grumman, said modern threats no longer emit predictable signals or stay in fixed locations. "Today’s RF environment is dense, dynamic, and lethal," he said. "Aircraft need continuous situational awareness and active self-protection—simultaneously."

Unlike external pod-based systems, he said, IVEWS is fully integrated into the aircraft, providing 360-degree coverage without sacrificing weapons stations.

The system is designed to work in parallel with the F-16’s radar, allowing pilots to remain offensive while maintaining defensive protection, he added.

According to Northrop Grumman, IVEWS is now the US Air Force’s program of record for the F-16 after winning a multi-phase competition.

The company says the system has logged more than 300 electronic warfare flight tests and over 500 flight hours, achieving a reported 99.5% operational availability rate.

Türkiye is the first foreign country that bought IVEWS, while allied nations are said to be in various stages of procurement discussions.

Responding to Anadolu's question on how IWEVS works with the fifth-generation aircraft, such as F-35, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), Guastella said: "Türkiye is a phenomenal partner; we're excited to move forward with them on their F-16 modernization. I see the F-16 and F-35 as an incredibly lethal combination."

"The two aircraft together really bring an unrivaled capability for any country that has both of them," he added.

Türkiye has 236 F-16 Fighting Falcon jets in its inventory and in the procurement process of F-35 fighter jets. It has emerged as a major exporter of reliable and effective drones.

The executives framed the upgrade as essential for coalition warfare, where fourth-generation aircraft must operate alongside newer platforms, providing mass, weapons capacity, and persistence in contested airspace.

"If an F-16 can survive," Guastella said, "it brings added firepower and flexibility that high-end platforms simply can’t provide in large numbers."

Officials said the company is ready to move the system into full-rate production, positioning IVEWS as a key bridge between today’s fighter fleets and the future of air combat.
