WASHINGTON
U.S. Deputy Secretary of Energy Daniel Poneman on Tuesday said that the most promising cooperation between Turkey and the United States was in energy efficiency in recent history.
Speaking at the 31st annual conference of the American Turkish Council in Washington on Tuesday, Poneman said that Turkish-U.S. relations were mainly based on security field.
Our two countries have strong bonds in NATO and we jointly contribute to peace and stability in different parts of the world. Our cooperation in counter-terrorism is increasing, Poneman stated.
Aside from security, Turkey and the U.S. share rich relations in economy and many other fields, Poneman noted.
We have made important progress to strengthen commercial relations between our two countries. Bilateral trade reached record figures in 2011. We intend to further boost our commercial relations with Turkey, Poneman said.
While security and economy are important part of Turkish-U.S. partnership, the topic of energy is one that involves the security and prosperity of our two countries, Poneman stressed.
Turkey plays a crucial role in facilitating energy security, Poneman indicated.
In his speech, Daniel Poneman said that he was never so emotional in his life as when he visited the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk (Anitkabir) in Ankara.
At Anitkabir, I have seen how Ataturk continues to inspire the Turkish people and how the people are strongly attached and loyal to Ataturk, Poneman also said.
