WASHINGTON
Ever the unrelenting lightning rod, Republican frontrunner Donald Trump doubled down on controversial statements about a Fox News debate moderator on Monday.
"The fact is, she asked me a very inappropriate question, she should really be apologizing to me, you wanna know the truth," Trump said in a phone interview with MSNBC’s ‘Morning Joe.’ "Other candidates have said that."
The real estate mogul was referring to Megyn Kelly, one of three journalists who moderated the first Republican presidential debate last Thursday.
During the debate, Kelly questioned Trump about tweets he sent that contained controversial remarks about women. The tweets Kelly referred to called women "fat", "dog" and "disgusting".
Trump took to Twitter to rebuff Kelly, and told CNN, "You could see there was blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her wherever."
The latter part of the comment sparked outrage with critics saying that it is a veiled reference to Kelly’s menstrual cycle, but Trump said it referred to her "nose and ears, because it’s a very common thing."
He told MSNBC on Monday that Kelly was "talking gibberish, and a stupid question", adding that "she got very angry, you could see that there was anger spewing out of her eyes, and this is what I was talking about".
Trump further claimed to be the best candidate for women.
"On women’s issues and women’s health issues there will be nobody better than Donald Trump," he said.
