ALEPPO, Syria
Syrian government forces ended a year-long siege in a prison in Syria's northern province in Aleppo on Thursday, according to activists.
The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights stated that armed regime forces entered the prison and broke the siege of the Aleppo central prison after a shootout with opposition fighters. According to the activits, tanks and armored vehicles had also entered the prison.
The prison holds approximately 3,000 inmates and has been a stronghold for government forces. Before the siege break it was surrounded and isolated by rebel fighters.
The Syrian government has not commented on the issue yet.
Meanwhile, at least 10 people were killed and five tanks were destroyed when the Free Syrian Army (FSA) organized attacks on regime troops in Syria’s west-central province of Hama, stated the Syrian Revolution General Commission (SRGC).
As violent clashes erupted between the army and rebels, many people were injured when the Syrian army bombed Hama province.
More than 100,000 people have been killed during the three-year conflict, which has left more than 6.5 million people internally displaced according to the UN. More than 2 million are now registered as refugees in neighboring Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq.
