BERLIN
The US' National Security Agency (NSA) continues to secretly monitor prominent German officials, including the Interior Minister, German media reported.
The newspaper "Bild am Sonntag" reported Sunday that the NSA continues to monitor Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere, a close confident of Chancellor Angela Merkel and other high officials.
An NSA official told the newspaper, "We have been ordered not to allow for any loss of information and no longer directly monitor the chancellor."
White House National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden said about the surveillance program in Germany, "If our intelligence agencies continue to gather information about the intentions of governments around the world, as is done by the intelligence services of all countries, we will not apologize for the fact that our services work more effectively."
