BAMAKO, Mali
A young girl diagnosed with deadly Ebola virus in Mali has died, a hospital spokesman told Anadolu Agency on Friday.
Gabriel Toure, spokesman for AdamaTraore hospital in capital Bamako, said that the young girl died on Thursday night after she had tested positive for Ebola.
The girl became the fourth patient to succumb to an Ebola infection in Mali.
Malian authorities have yet to confirm the girl's death.
Thus far, the Malian government confirmed the death of three Ebola patients, two of which were announced this week.
The first case – reported in late October – was a two-year-old girl who had come from Guinea. She succumbed to the virus on October 24.
In recent months, Ebola – a contagious disease for which there is no known treatment or cure – has killed roughly 4,800 people in West Africa.
The deadly virus has also reared its head in the Democratic Republic of Congo and in a handful of other countries outside Africa.
The UN's World Health Organizationrecently said that a total of 14,098 people worldwide had contracted the virus to date, mainly in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
According to the WHO, a total of 5,160 people have died of the virus.
