The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruled on Thursday that Russia violated several articles of the European Convention on Human Rights in the case of the disappearances of 36 men abducted in Chechnya by armed groups in security style operations between 2000 and 2006.
Twenty separate applications were filed between October 2008 and October 2010 by 90 Russian nationals, all close relatives of the 36 men who disappeared after being abducted by unidentified groups of men between 2000 and 2006. The applicants claimed that the 36 men were abducted by Russian state servicemen.
The Court found that Russia violated Articles 2, 3, 5 and 13 of the Convention concerning right to life, prohibition of torture, right to liberty and security, and right to an effective remedy.
In accordance with the judgment which is not final, Russia is due to pay the applicants a total of 2 million Euros.
This is not the first time Russia has been convicted by Court, as they have regularly been found guilty of violations of the same rights in similar cases in more than 120 judgments, concerning the disappearances of Chechen residents since 1999.
