The number of deaths caused by the Ebola virus has risen to 4,033, the World Health Organization said in a report Friday.
The organisation said that a total of 8,399 confirmed, probable, and suspected cases of Ebola virus disease have been reported in seven affected countries, Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Spain, and the U.S., up to the end of October 8.
The latest figures record 4,076 cases and 2,316 deaths in Liberia; 2,950 cases and 930 deaths in Sierra Leone; 1,350 cases and 778 deaths in Guinea; 20 cases and eight deaths in Nigeria; and one case in Senegal.
Outside Africa, there is also one death in the U.S. and one case in Spain.
The first confirmed "imported" case of the virus in the U.S. passed away on October 8 and the first case of human-to-human transmission of the virus in Spain was confirmed on October 6. The case in Spain represents the first human-to-human transmission outside Africa.
The organization also reported that 233 health workers had died as a result of the deadly infection.
