BEIJING
Three more people were arrested Monday in connection with a landslide of construction waste that buried an industrial park in China’s southern Shenzhen city, where rescuers have recovered more than 60 bodies.
The Procuratorate of Bao'an District revealed in a statement that the suspects – whose identities were not disclosed – were accused of “failing to ensure safety management” before the Dec. 20 incident that buried 33 buildings in Guangming New District.
State news agency Xinhua also reported that the latest arrests brought the number of those placed in custody in the case to 20.
On Monday, the Supreme People's Procuratorate revealed that another 12 suspects were under investigation for dereliction of duty and abuse of power.
Among them are including the deputy director of Shenzhen Guangming New District Urban Management Bureau, the deputy director of the Municipal Service Center and an engineer with Shenzhen Water and Soil Conservation Supervision and Monitoring Station.
Of the 77 victims reported missing after the landslide at Hengtaiyu industrial park, 69 were confirmed dead as of Monday.
An investigative team of the State Council confirmed last month that the tragedy was a work safety mishap and not caused by any natural geological disaster.
